Kokoro Connect – 16 and 17

This is us.

Relationships are never perfect.

Each of us has a part of ourselves we don’t want others to see. A part of ourselves that we hide away, even from our closest friends and relatives. A part of ourselves we tuck away into the deepest, darkest recesses of our hearts.

Kokoro Connect reminds us of the parts of ourselves that we hide. It reminds us that when the darkness in our hearts is uncovered, people are hurt, the closest to us hurt most of all. We see that we, too, hold the potential to hurt and the potential to be hurt, and we fear it. We feel the fear and pain in the characters’ chests as though it were our own.

We, the viewers, subject ourselves to this fear and pain voluntarily. Why do we do this? Apart from our own masochistic tendencies, it is because we wish to see how such a situation can be resolved. We seek to see the light at the end of the tunnel, the ray of hope, which we hope to see in our own lives.

Kokoro Connect reminds us that there is hope. That, when all is said and done, we can accept the darkness in our own and others’ hearts.

It inspires us to go and uncover our secrets. It inspires us to connect our hearts with others’.

But really, what sold me on this series was imagining the pain of getting punched in the chest by Inaba. That was the main source of pain in my chest while watching it. Oh, and imagining getting kicked in the balls by Yui. Oh god, I want Yui to kick me in the balls.

Maybe it’s more about our masochistic tendencies than wanting to feel hope.

Anyway, I hope this series inspired you to connect your heart with others’ hearts as we enter the new year!

Thanks for the 4 episodes! Well, if I know anything about inner darkness, denying it will just create a giant monster boss that will beat the living daylights out of you. Accepting it will get you magical powers and the ability to go into TVs.

It was a really good series with only a few mentionable negative to dock it’s overall score. One of my favorites from that season. Glad you guys liked working on it and thanks for doing an excellent job.

  29. deyes says:

Thank you. I was also wondering if there will be a batch of the series.
I have yet to start watching it, so if a batch is coming I’ll just wait for that, however long that will be. Else I’ll just start watching asap.

Awwww, the 2nd part of ep17 was so cute =3

  34. kidlat020 says:

finished watching the 4 eps. thanks for the new year present.

I found some plot holes here. SPOILERS AHEAD
Remember that balloon vine was able to possess Taichi’s imouto? So tell me why is Nagase (or anyone for that matter) so scared of Gotou and only Gotou when balloon vine can be practically anyone? Biased phobia or something? And about that club thing… why would they be so scared of having their club disbanded when balloon vine can still “haunt” them in other means? And most of all he never warned them about what would happen if the club disbanded.
It seems this was the final episode. Inaba was not the usual tsundere stereotype but… best girl XD. Although that very last part was so out of character.

    • Rem says:

      1. Balloon Vine didn’t possess Taichi’s sister. That was a third party.

      2. The club was scared of Gotou because Balloon Vine would usually possess him to talk to them.

      3. They weren’t scared of their club disbanding. They were worried about losing Gotou as their club adviser.

      4. They wanted to disband the CRC so that they weren’t targeted as a club. The logic wasn’t quite there, but the fact that the entirety of the CRC was part of these phenomenons is something to consider.

  35. Koporo says:

    Any plans for a batch?

  36. Julian_EX says:

thank you very much for your releases… I am very happy to make this show for my new year celebration.
    thanks rori subs!!

  37. Oboeotaku says:

Well, I just finished marathoning this series. Twas a good start to the new year, finishing 17 episodes in under 24 hours. Thanks for the subs.

  38. monz says:

awesome series, and you guys did a great job. Thanks for the hard work!

  39. Big_Boss_90 says:

Thank you for the series, guys!

  40. Gustlel says:

So, the new season is beginning, do you guys have any clue as to what you are gonna do?

  41. tormaid says:

Quite a solid conclusion; I’ve revised my opinion of this show. But god do these ATX recordings blow…

  42. crimso says:

Enjoying this series has absolutely nothing to do with masochism, but everything with a feeling of salvation after sharing the cathartic experience with the characters.

True, people with real-life experience in that field could argue that the author actually still went easy on the characters. Yes, realistically, the whole thing would have taken longer. Yes, realistically, some of the things depicted might have caused wounds that actually would never heal.

Still, as someone who does have experience in the field I can tell you that it’s nice to be reminded of the fact that something can be done if those involved get their act together. There can be light at the end of the tunnel — and it’s not necessarily an approaching train.

  43. Alex says:

Damn, with this and Nekomonogatari, 2013 looks so damn good. Thank you so much!

    • Derere says:

And Taichi’s relationship with Iori is kind of similar to Koymi and Hanekawa’s. Both left a kind of happy-sad, kind of lonely feeling. This series was great to watch and taught a lot of lessons.

  44. Rits says:

    Dereban!!!

  45. Kinny Riddle says:

Thanks for the release. Man, Dereban ended up being the cutest in this arc. We should henceforth call her that from now on.

Iori sure has grown a lot in this arc, having to endure the final collapse of her old personality after many intrusions by Balloon Vine*, she went into a shell and acted more or less like a bitch. It wasn’t till Dereban’s scolding and subsequent kidnapping that finally kicked her out of it and made her decide to rebuild the personality she wanted to project on her own terms, not via the expectation of other people.

    * So which name is more “accurate” for “Fuuzenkazura” 風船葛?
Heartseed or Balloon Vine? Both point to “cardiospermum” in Wikipedia, though the latter has the more precise name of “cardiospermum halicacabum”, which leads to the Japanese Wikipedia entry of 風船葛. Still, “Heartseed” sounds more catchy than “Balloon Vine”.

  46. magicpowah says:

    DEM EMBARRASSING CONFESSIONS LOL
    <333 Inaba.

  47. Nick says:

Thank you very much for subbing this fantastic show! It was a pleasure to watch the last 4 eps back to back. I’m not complaining, but was the RAW for the last couple of episodes bad in quality? I could see a lot of blurring in ep 17.

  48. DKan says:

If & when you batch this series, I hope that you’ll fix the misheard in ep16 @ ~20:40 where what Iori was screaming was actually:
    kokoro_connect_4_0244

  49. Uchuujin says:

Thank you very much for your hard work.

However, as much as I don’t mind liberal translations on most part (they made sense in context anyway,) and as much as I understand that you guys tried to aim for a quick release, there’s one part that bugged me very very much and that’s Inaba’s mind confession after Taichi wakes up in the infirmary in ep17, where “suki ni natte, suki ni shite” was subbed as “Make love to me” instead of something closer to the actual variation of “I love you.” I’m not sure if it was an oversight or an intentional joke, but I think it ruins the mood. Those were genuine and passionate feelings and had nothing to do with sexual desire, not in the context in that scene. And it gives unknowing viewers the wrong idea. Now that scene is flying all over the net… for the wrong reason. As a fan of the series it’s not something I can keep quiet about.

And that concludes my my rant. It’d be wonderful if corrections can be made, but even if not, all is still dandy.

I still sincerely appreciate very much that you took your time to sub the episodes. A big Thank You to you all.

  50. Kitty says:

wow, rem hating on the show.

ep 17, a little error here:
12:13 – Whether I’m acting in line with common sense or not, they’ll always be there [forgot the word TO here] tell me that I’m me.

[and before someone wants to bitch at me, i'm not SCREAMING, just pointing it out.]

  51. Kitty says:

wow, i’m totally doing this on the fly, and as i’m watching… again, forgetting the word “to” here:
19:29 – You have our word that your relationship is sure ["to" is forgotten here] flourish after just one visit!

  52. Oscar says:

Thank you for the continued coverage of Kokoro Connect.
